On October 7, 2024, a devastating Hamas attack during the Jewish holiday of Simchat Torah caught Israel off guard, leading to large-scale rocket fire, cross-border incursions, and ground assaults. One year later, over 42,000 Palestinians have died, Gaza lies in ruins, and 2 million residents face one of this century’s worst humanitarian crises. Israel has yet to achieve its goal of eradicating Hamas, with around 100 hostages still held in Gaza. U.S.-sponsored cease-fire talks between Israel and Hamas have faltered as conflict spreads to Lebanon, raising fears of a regional escalation involving Iran.
