News: Charles Michel embraces Macron’s proposal on the European political community

18 May 2022

During the plenary session of the European Economic and Social Committee, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, embraced the proposal of French President Emmanuel Macron to create a European political community. The aim, Michel explained, is to deepen cooperation on issues of peace, stability, security and foreign policy. Cooperation between EU states and non-member states would focus on the implementation of socio-economic programmes that do not necessarily require regulatory alignment. After the plenary, Michel visited the Balkan region to present the new proposal, where Serbia and Albania announced their support to the initiative.

During his visit to Albania, the President of the European Council stated that Albania had fulfilled all the conditions for opening accession negotiations and called for a relaunch of the enlargement process.
