The EU seems almost resigned to the loss of substantial political initiative and power of structural transformation in the Western Balkans, mainly focused on border security and migration dossiers. In this scenario, the historic decision to have granted candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova has certainly put the question "enlargement" on the table of priorities, but it risks further complicating a process that currently sees a great cacophony of discussions, forums and processes.
