News: Elections in Serbia: European Parliament meets to discuss irregularities

President Aleksandar Vučić’s Serbian Progress Party (SNS) won the parliamentary elections with an absolute majority of 46.71%. The opposition coalition Serbia Against Violence (SPN) received 23.58% of the vote, while the Serbian Socialist Party (SPS) obtained 6.57% of the vote.

In the evening, a protest organized by opposition forces was held in Belgrade, denouncing electoral fraud. Protesters accused SNS of having organized the transport of more than 40,000 citizens of the Srpska Republic in order to alter the results of the votes in favor of Vučić. Tensions culminated on 24 December with the attempted assault by demonstrators on Belgrade City Hall.

the OSCE-led election observation mission confirmed the presence of "fraud and other illegal actions" as well as intimidation and vote buying.

Following the request from the European Parliament’s Election Observation Delegation in Serbia, the European Parliament met in plenary session on 17 January, deciding to undertake an investigation on voting irregularities.
