Greece could open a complicated parliamentary immunity case after the European elections

7 June 2024

The election to the European Parliament of Fredi Beleri, a candidate from the Greek centre-right New Democracy party, opened a diplomatic case between Albania-Greece and European institutions. Beleri, an ethnic Greek Albanian with dual citizenship, is currently detained in Albania after being convicted, in May 2023, for buying and selling votes during the elections for mayor of Himara, in the south of Albania.

The liberation of Beleri will not happen automatically, since Albania is not a Member State of the European Union, as in the case of Ilaria Salis. However, the European Parliament may decide not to grant immunity in the case of Beleri.
