Enlargement policy does not generate electoral consensus for European parties; on the contrary, it is often used for propaganda, fueling fears about democracy, labor, resources, and migration to gain votes. However, national parties play a crucial role in enlargement decisions. This policy brief by Luisa Chiodi analyzes their positions based on party programs, parliamentary debates, media, think tanks, and interviews with experts and journalists. It covers 13 member states and non-social democratic parties relevant to the enlargement process.
