UN Recognition to Mark the Srebrenica Genocide Is Only the Beginning

The United Nations General Assembly’s adoption of the resolution on the establishment of the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica is the first step in honouring the victims of one of the darkest chapters of modern history.

But now Bosnia and Herzegovina need to undertake the necessary legislative steps to ensure that future generations will learn from history in order to develop instruments and mechanisms to prevent such crimes in the future.

According to the author, the main problem in the educational system in Bosnia and Herzegovina is that “the war remains a sensitive and poorly covered topic […] with textbooks providing minimal and often biased information”.
